Choosing Hot Melt Adhesive for the Packaging Industry

2026-08-12 Jiajian Technical Team Application Guide

Packaging Is the Largest Hot Melt Market

From carton sealing to food packaging and express bags, hot melt adhesive dominates packaging because it sets in seconds, needs no solvents, and runs cleanly on high-speed lines. The right grade, however, depends on line speed, substrate, and compliance.

Match Open Time to Line Speed

Open time is the window the adhesive stays tacky. Slow lines (30-60 cartons/min) work with 8-15 second open time; high-speed lines (60-100+ cartons/min) need 5-8 second open time and 3-5 second set time. Wrong timing causes pop-open cartons.

Food-Grade and Cold-Chain Grades

For food contact, choose adhesives compliant with FDA 21 CFR 175.105 or EU 10/2011, with full COA, COC, and migration reports. For frozen or refrigerated logistics, specify cold-chain formulations rated to -20°C so bonds survive the cold.

Viscosity and Application Method

Spray and bead applicators need lower viscosity (1,500-5,000 mPa·s) for clean coverage. Thicker beads suit slow, heavy cartons. Pair the viscosity with your Nordson, Robatech, ITW Dynatec, or Valco Melton equipment.

Selection Checklist

  • Confirm line speed to set open and set time
  • Verify food-contact compliance for packaging that touches food
  • Specify cold-chain rating for frozen or chilled goods
  • Match viscosity to your applicator type
  • Plan tank cleaning every 100-200 hours to prevent charring
