Hot Melt Adhesive Application Temperature & Open Time Guide
Two numbers decide whether a hot melt bond succeeds: application temperature and open time. Get them wrong and you get poor wetting, popped joints or stringing. This guide explains both and how to match them to your line.
Application Temperature
This is the temperature of the molten adhesive as it leaves the gun or coater. It must be high enough to wet the substrate but within equipment limits.

Open Time
Open time is the window after application during which parts can still be positioned and form a bond. Too short and flaps pop before compression; too long and cycle time grows.
- Fast line — needs shorter open time to keep pace
- Manual assembly — can use longer open time for positioning
- Large parts — need enough open time to place before set
