1. Define the exact pocket-spring bond
“Mattress adhesive” is too broad for product selection. Before asking for a sample, document:

4. Control adhesive amount and placement
Two candidates cannot be compared fairly if the application amount or pattern changes without being recorded. Define:
- Target bead, spiral or spray geometry.
- Placement relative to the seam or bond area.
- Method for checking applied amount.
- Contact pressure or compression method.
- Acceptable variation across the spring unit.
Photograph labelled samples and record any pattern adjustment. This helps separate an adhesive issue from a nozzle, pressure or placement issue.
5. Match timing to the real production sequence
L-2909 lists a 30-second open-time reference and an 8-second curing-time reference. These values do not guarantee a production cycle. Usable timing can change with adhesive amount, substrate, room conditions, application temperature, contact pressure and equipment behaviour.
Measure the actual sequence:
- Adhesive application to first contact.
- First contact to completion of compression.
- Release to the next handling or assembly step.
- Any delay created by normal line variation.
- Stop-and-restart behaviour after a controlled pause.
Define what “set” means for the buyer’s process, such as no seam movement at a specified handling point, and apply the same definition to every candidate.
6. Change one variable at a time
Begin within the documented 150–180°C application range and follow the equipment supplier’s safety instructions. If adjustment is needed, avoid changing temperature, adhesive amount, pressure and line speed together.
During the trial, observe:
- Feeding and melting stability.
- Application consistency across the defined sample set.
- Stringing, dripping, overspray or nozzle buildup.
- Material distortion, strike-through or visible marking.
- Bond movement at the agreed handling point.
- Char, odour or colour change during normal dwell and restart conditions.
A one-variable-at-a-time record makes the result easier to review and troubleshoot.
7. Set pass/fail criteria before the sample arrives
The buyer owns the finished-product acceptance method. A practical trial record may include:
- Application consistency across a defined number of units.
- Seam or bond position after the planned compression and handling sequence.
- Failure mode under the buyer’s internal test method.
- Results after the buyer’s chosen conditioning or ageing period.
- Fabric or paper appearance and absence of unacceptable contamination.
- Line cleanliness and restart performance.
Record material batches, settings, operator, date, sample identity and deviations. A statement that the sample “worked” is not enough for technical approval.
8. Separate application fit from compliance evidence
A technical data sheet describes a product reference; it is not a complete regulatory or customer-approval package. Before commercial use, tell the supplier:
- Destination country or region.
- Exact mattress construction and adhesive location.
- Customer, retailer or brand-specific document requirements.
- Required document version, product identity and batch traceability.
- Any restricted-substance or emissions review required by the buyer.
Request current, product-specific documentation and have the buyer’s compliance team assess it for the intended use. Do not infer certification coverage from a general material report.
