A carton may look like an ordinary paper package while presenting a very different bonding surface. UV varnish, laminating film and other smooth finishes can change how an adhesive wets and holds the surface. For a buyer, that means a product selected for uncoated board should not automatically be assumed to work on a coated carton.

The practical sourcing question is not simply, “Which hot melt is strong?” It is: Which hot melt adhesive is compatible with the exact carton surface, application equipment and production conditions that will be used?

This checklist focuses on industrial hot melt pellets for fast-forming UV-coated paper and laminated cartons. It also explains the evidence currently available for Jiajian model L-2918 and the information a supplier needs before recommending a production trial.

Why coated cartons need a separate sourcing review

Packaging buyers commonly work with several surface constructions:

  • uncoated paper or paperboard;
  • film-laminated paperboard;
  • UV-varnished paper;
  • printed or converted board with a smooth outer layer;
  • cartons combining paper and selected plastic surfaces.

These materials should not be treated as interchangeable. The coating or film, rather than the paper underneath, may become the actual bonding surface. Adhesive performance can also change with application temperature, coating weight, compression time, line speed and ambient conditions.

For that reason, the final selection should be based on the real production materials and a controlled trial—not on the carton description alone.

1. Identify the actual bonding surfaces

Before requesting a sample, describe both sides of the bond. “Paper box” is usually not specific enough.

Provide the supplier with:

  • the paper or board grade;
  • whether the surface is UV-varnished, laminated or otherwise coated;
  • the film type, if known;
  • whether the bond is paper-to-paper, coated-paper-to-paper, or paper-to-plastic;
  • printed, folded and converted samples from the real production batch.

If several carton finishes are used, include each one in the trial. A sample that works on one finish should not be treated as evidence for every finish.

2. Confirm the application equipment and adhesive format

Hot melt pellets are intended for compatible industrial melting and application equipment. Glue sticks, by contrast, are normally selected around the diameter and operating conditions of a compatible glue gun.

The adhesive format should therefore follow the equipment. For a pellet application, tell the supplier:

  • melter or tank type;
  • hose and nozzle configuration, where applicable;
  • current set temperatures;
  • application pattern or glue amount;
  • line speed and available compression time;
  • cleaning and changeover practices.

Do not place pellets into equipment designed only for glue sticks unless the equipment manufacturer confirms compatibility.

3. Use model-specific technical data as a starting window

The current model-specific technical data sheet for L-2918, revised March 26, 2025, identifies the product for fast forming of laminated cartons, UV-coated paper and selected smooth plastic surfaces.

These values describe L-2918 under the scope of that TDS revision. They are not a guarantee of finished-carton performance, and they should not be applied to another model without its own documentation.

The recommended temperature range is a trial window, not a universal machine setting. The correct operating point still depends on the equipment, actual adhesive temperature at application, substrate, glue amount and production speed.

4. Build a controlled line trial

A useful trial records the conditions well enough to explain success or failure. Before testing, agree on the acceptance criteria with the technical and production teams.

  1. Material identification: board, coating or film, print finish and production batch.
  2. Equipment settings: tank, hose and nozzle temperatures plus the measured application condition available on the line.
  3. Process conditions: line speed, adhesive amount or pattern, compression time and ambient conditions.
  4. Initial result: whether the carton forms correctly within the available process time.
  5. Conditioned result: whether the bond still meets the buyer’s agreed acceptance criteria after the chosen storage and handling check.
  6. Observed failure mode: adhesive separation, substrate damage, opening at a fold, contamination, stringing or another clearly described result.

Change one major variable at a time where practical. Changing the substrate, temperature and glue amount together makes the outcome harder to interpret.

5. Avoid mixing unknown adhesives in the melt system

The L-2918 TDS instructs users not to melt it together with other adhesives because different components may reduce performance. It also recommends adding smaller quantities more frequently, avoiding excessive heating and keeping the tank covered to prevent contamination.

For a production changeover, agree on the cleaning and transition procedure with the equipment and adhesive teams. Do not assume that two yellow pellet products have the same chemistry or operating behavior simply because they look similar.

6. Send a complete RFQ or sample request

A detailed request helps the supplier decide whether L-2918 is a reasonable trial candidate or whether another product direction should be reviewed.

  • company and destination market;
  • carton application and finished-package use;
  • both bonding surfaces;
  • coating, film or varnish details;
  • equipment type and current operating temperatures;
  • line speed and compression time;
  • current adhesive format and any known problem;
  • expected monthly consumption;
  • sample quantity and evaluation method;
  • documentation required for the specific model and market.

Price, minimum order quantity and lead time should be confirmed for the final specification and destination. They are not inferred from the technical data sheet.

When should a buyer consider L-2918?

Based on the current model-specific record, L-2918 is a documented starting candidate when the application involves laminated cartons, UV-coated paper or selected smooth plastic surfaces and uses compatible pellet-melting equipment.

It should not be described as suitable for every coated carton. The appropriate decision is to review the exact substrate and equipment, then run a controlled sample trial before approving volume production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can L-2918 bond every UV-coated carton?

No universal compatibility is claimed. UV varnishes, films, paper grades and process conditions differ. The exact production materials should be tested under controlled line conditions.

What application temperature is listed for L-2918?

The model-specific TDS revised March 26, 2025 lists a recommended application range of 140–170°C. The final operating point must be confirmed on the buyer’s equipment and substrate.

Is the 3–5 second value a guaranteed production result?

No. It is a set/cure-time reference in the current L-2918 TDS. Actual forming performance depends on substrate, adhesive amount, equipment, compression and line conditions.

Can hot melt pellets be used in a glue gun?

Only use an adhesive format that the equipment manufacturer supports. Industrial pellets are generally reviewed for compatible melting and application systems, while glue guns are normally matched to a specified glue-stick diameter.

Does a general SGS or RoHS report prove L-2918 compliance?

Not automatically. A general material report should not be presented as model-specific evidence unless the report clearly identifies L-2918 and covers the buyer’s required scope. Request the exact document and verify its model, date, test scope and issuing body.
