Define what the replacement must prove
Before changing a 43mm hot melt adhesive, write down why you are considering the change and what evidence would justify approval. A different supplier, a different adhesive model and a different substrate are separate changes. Keep them identifiable so the trial can answer a specific question.
For an edgebanding review involving K-3801 or K-3205, define the machine, board, edge material and finished-product requirements first. The following is a recommended buyer trial plan, not a report of completed customer testing or a replacement for the equipment manufacturer's instructions.
Establish the starting record
Record the current adhesive reference and the production setup you intend to compare. Include the equipment model, adhesive feed dimensions, board and edge-material references, temperature settings, line conditions, adhesive application and pressure or holding stage.
Keep a reference sample and describe the current acceptance method. If the existing process has a problem, record where it appears and under which conditions. "Improve adhesion" is too broad to serve as a pass/fail instruction; the technical team should specify the test, the inspection point and the acceptable result.
Agree a changeover method before loading the sample
Both the K-3801 and K-3205 TDS handling notes say not to mix the adhesive with other adhesives while melting. Do not assume that matching diameter or application temperature makes two formulations suitable for mixing.
Have the equipment owner and adhesive supplier agree the changeover and cleaning procedure for the actual system. This article does not prescribe a flushing material, cleaner, purge quantity or dismantling method. Those decisions require equipment-specific instructions and a qualified operator.
Identify how the trial will be separated from the previous material, and label the adhesive being tested. If the approved changeover cannot be completed, stop the comparison and record the limitation instead of presenting the result as a clean test of the new model.
Check the sample and the trial window
Verify the sample's model and batch reference against its document revision and the agreed dimensions. Resolve 43mm machine-fit questions before a powered trial.
The K-3801 sheet revised February 15, 2025, and K-3205 sheet revised March 20, 2025, both list 180–200°C as the recommended application-temperature range. Establish the actual trial window within the equipment's limits and with the responsible technical reviewer. The shared range does not make the two products interchangeable.
Use the model comparison to identify the reference values that need discussion. Keep sheet timing figures separate from observed process timings.
Keep each trial traceable
For each run, record:
- Adhesive model, batch or sample identifier, and document revision.
- Machine and feed format, with the changeover method approved for that system.
- Board and edge-material identifiers and their recorded condition.
- Actual process settings, material application and production sequence.
- Test method, inspection time, photographs and observed results.
- Any departure from the plan, the reviewer and the decision.
Change one planned factor at a time where the process permits. If several factors must change together, document them and limit the conclusion accordingly. A good-looking sample from a different board, temperature and application method cannot isolate the effect of the adhesive alone.
Approve the result within a defined scope
Agree acceptance criteria before judging the samples. Depending on the intended product, these may cover feed behavior, application consistency, visible bond appearance, handling and the bond tests specified by the buyer's technical team. Environmental or durability requirements need their own agreed methods and conditions.
Do not release a replacement simply because the first sample stayed attached. The two TDS documents require adequate testing of the intended application before scale-up and do not guarantee the performance of every finished product.
An approval record should name the accepted adhesive, equipment, materials, process window and tests. Retain the sample record and identify the changes that require another review. Approval for one setup should not silently become approval for every machine or board in the factory.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add the new 43mm adhesive on top of the old material?
Do not assume that this is acceptable. The cited model sheets advise against mixing with other adhesives during melting. Follow an equipment-specific changeover method agreed by the responsible parties.
How many samples are enough?
The cited sheets do not define a sampling plan for the buyer's finished product. Have the technical team agree sample quantities, conditions and acceptance criteria for the intended risk and application.
Does a successful trial guarantee future orders?
A trial supports a decision within its recorded scope. Keep incoming material and process controls tied to the approved specification, and review changes rather than assuming all later conditions are identical.
Request a changeover sample review
Send your current adhesive reference, machine, board and edge material, reason for changing, trial requirements, destination and estimated monthly quantity through the K-3801 product review or K-3205 product review. This information supports a defined trial discussion without assuming compatibility or a guaranteed result.
